This year, as families struggle along with the economy, it is important that everyone takes advantage of available tax credits. Help spread the word so individuals can help offset the costs of child care and other expenses!
What Credits Exist?
Child and Dependent Care Credit: Did you pay someone else to care for your child(ren) or your dependent(s) so that you could work? If so, you may be able to claim the Credit for Child and Dependent Care expenses on your tax return. For more information visit here or here.
Child Tax Credit: If you have a qualifying child, this credit can be claimed in addition to the child and dependent care credit. For more information visit here or here.
Earned Income Tax Credit: This credit is for individuals and/or families that earned a low to moderate income during the past year. To find out more and determine if you quality for the EITC, visit here or here.

Tax Credit Return for Energy Efficiency
You can claim a federal tax credit for energy-efficient improvements made in 2009. If you need a new water heater, air conditioning unit, etc., please visit these websites to learn which models qualify for the tax credit:

The VITA program, sponsored through the IRS, offers free tax preparation services to families earning $49,000 or less per year. The TCE program assists elderly tax filers. Both programs are run in communities across the country.
- To locate a VITA or TCE/Tax-Aide site in your area, call 1.800.829.1040 or visit a helpful website here.
- Many sites are appointment-only or have specified drop-in hours, so check with each one for their schedules.
- Families need to bring specific information and documents to VITA or TCE/Tax-Aide sites. Make sure to check and see what you need to bring in advance.
- Beware of scams: Never give out Social Security Numbers or bank information over the phone, or to individuals who come to your home claiming to be IRS representatives.
